…first, born two months prematurely and pretty much everyone thought I would not make it, but I did. This fact about being born prematurely later became like an excuse people made for me being different. They couldn´t fathom in what way different, just different, possibly gay.

I can relate to this so well! I was born seriously premature ( 1 1/2 — 2 months) in the mid 1960s. I was just a little over three pounds when I was born. I don’t know how much that relates to my experience of being transgender, but I suspect a lot. I also lived under the suspicion that I was a gay male. When I came out as trans to one of my older sisters, she said, “I figured it was either that or you were gay.” Later, I came out as queer and proved both to be true!
