If you’ve met one trans person you’ve met…one trans person. Another old saying but this one still seems to ring true.

When I first transitioned, one of the first things that occurred to me was there is no one way to be transgender. That was only after I had to jump through a lot of hoops (gatekeeper therapists, stringent name change rules, etc) before even trying to come out.

My hope is that we — trans health professionals, government, legal profession, the media, and, especially, the transgender community itself — will move past this need to fit everyone into the same one or two narratives. I feel like stories like this help move the needle, but we’re definitely not all the way there yet.

Thanks for this piece!
