It’s true that sometimes it is safer to go stealth but a lot of people do not have that privilege. When someone has the option of successfully going stealth, it is referred to as “passing privilege.” Even when someone does have that option, should they do it? When I first transitioned I kept it rather close to my vest, and I have never disclosed to an employer that I was trans until long after I was hired. Though most of them, I’m pretty sure, already figured it out. For the most part, though, I am pretty much out and it seems to provide the people around me with a frame of reference about what it means to be transgender that doesn’t come from stereotypes.
