TERF is a description, not a slur (especially the way Darcy uses it in this piece). It stands for Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist. I don’t know any people who are called this who would object to being called a radical feminist. Many of them proudly tout this identity. The problem is that not all radical feminists are exclusive of trans people, and they were the ones who first originated the term. Instead of TERF, I have lately seen the term gender critical (or GC) radical feminist. Sometimes I just see GC all by itself. Either way, all the GC arguments I have seen have amounted to either a)gender doesn’t exist (or it is a social construct that should be ignored) and therefore trans women are not women and trans men are not men; or b)gender is a social construct created by the patriarchy to keep women down and trans people are just taking advantage of this to (somehow) hurt women. Both are false narratives and transphobic AF. So if someone is a radical feminist and espouses ideas that serve to demonize, ostracize, and — yes — exclude trans folks, what else would you want to call them?
