When I started transition 9 years ago, the first thing I learned was that there was no one right way to be trans. I encountered people at that time who tried to tell me I was “doing it wrong,” and I generally told them where they could go. I remember one friend asking me why I was dressing so “butch” because I was wearing jeans, a top, and a hat (a stylish front-brimmed cap). I just told her there is no dress code to being trans.
